The assailant fired a shotgun at the victim as he left his home to go to work. The victim was slightly wounded in the attack and managed to run after the assailant, arrest him and hand him over to Malian authorities, TF1 television reported.

Malian officials said they do not believe the attack was politically motivated.

This was the first attack on a French citizen in the Malian capital since France's intervention against Islamists and Tuareg militants in January.
