GAZA, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Two lion cubs born at a Gaza Strip amusement park and were named after missiles Hamas fired at Israel last year, Palestinian officials said.

The cubs -- one male and one female -- were born Tuesday, said Nahed al-Majdub, head of the Bissan amusement park.

"They were named Fajr and Sijil," he said, Arabic for "dawn" and "clay."

"It is the first time lions have been born in the Gaza Strip," al-Majdub added.

The cubs' parents were smuggled into the Gaza Strip from Egypt four years ago, Middle East Online reported Tuesday.

"Despite Israel's unjust siege, Palestinians managed to smuggle these 2 lions to draw a smile on faces of Gaza kids," Hamas' armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said on Twitter.
