JAKARTA, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Wednesday he has demanded an explanation for Australian monitoring of his phone.
Yudhoyono said Indonesia will halt any cooperation with Australia on the smuggling of refugees until he gets a satisfactory response, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported. He said that includes maritime patrols looking for boats headed from Indonesia to Australia.
The president said Australia must also adopt a "code of conduct" that would prevent electronic monitoring of allies.
"It is not possible that we can continue our cooperation when we are still uncertain that there is no spying towards us, spying towards our soldiers," he said.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told the House of Representatives that Yudhoyono will get a quick answer.
"That is overwhelmingly in the interests of both our countries," Abbott said.
Yudhoyono also said the Indonesian military will not hold joint exercises with Australia until the dispute is resolved.
