Part of child's ear torn off, maybe swallowed, nursery owner says

BIRMINGHAM, England, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Part of a boy's ear may have been torn off and swallowed by another child at a nursery school in England, the nursery owner said.

The victim required 10 stitches to close a wound to his ear lobe on his second day of nursery school, investigators said.

Daniyaal Abubaker, about to turn 2, sustained the injury at the Mucky Pups Day Nursery, the British newspaper The Mirror reported Tuesday.

His mother Afsha, 26, said the family was told different versions of the incident by the nursery staff, including that he had been bitten by another child and his torn piece of ear, never found, may have been eaten by the assailant.

"When I spoke to Paula [Tidmus, owner of the nursery] and asked what had happened to the piece of ear, she said the child must have swallowed it," Afsha Abubaker said.

The incident occurred in September, but West Midlands police said they were still investigating.

The newspaper noted the nursery was inspected days after the incident and was rated "inadequate" by officials who found risk assessments were "not rigorous enough" and that the nursery did not "address all safety issues."
