NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The four militants suspected of carrying out the Westgate Mall attack in Kenya were in the country for three months beforehand, a senior official says.
Further, the unidentified official told the BBC it's believed the four suspects passed through a border checkpoint from Somalia, where they allegedly trained for the attack.
Sixty-seven people died during the four-day siege in September when militants from the Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab stormed the upscale shopping center in Nairobi.
The BBC's source, who the British network said is familiar with the investigation, said the suspects were staying in Eastleigh, a Nairobi suburb. Six individuals have been charged with abetting the terrorist plot by housing the suspects.
"They got to Kenya in June this year through a common entry point. They lived in Eastleigh," the official told the BBC. "They were in Somalia prior to the attack being carried out. They were in Kenya for some time together."
