Airlines warned to avoid flights over erupting Indonesian volcano

JAKARTA, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Authorities at the Kuala Namu International Airport in Indonesia instructed all airlines to avoid four routes over an erupting volcano.

Ali Sofyan, manager of the airport, said drifting ash from the eruption at Mount Sinabung posed a danger, The Jakarta Post reported.

"Today, Mount Sinabung spewed volcanic ash about 8,000 meters [8,800 yards] into the sky in a westerly direction. Therefore, any route heading west, such as toward Meulaboh and Sinabang, are closed," Soyfan said.
