ATHENS, Greece, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Several thousand people marked the 40th anniversary of a student uprising against Greece's junta during a march in Athens Sunday, organizers said.

Between 7,000 and 10,000 people participated in the event, ekathimerini.com reported.

The march began at Athens Polytechnic, where the military crushed the uprising in 1973, leading to the deaths of 24 civilians.

The event was held amid tight security, and 5,000 police were deployed in Athens to monitor the march and guard buildings.

Police said they detained 99 people before the rally, but no incidents were reported during the march.
