Typhoon Haiyan leaves14 dead in Vietnam; 5 missing

HANOI, Vietnam, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Fourteen people died, five remained missing and 81 people were injured in Vietnam as a result of Typhoon Haiyan, government officials said.

The National Committee for Search and Rescue said the deaths and injuries occurred before Haiyan made landfall Monday as people were reinforcing their houses and trimming trees in preparation, Vietnam News reported Tuesday.

Searchers in Quang Ninh province were looking for four people reported missing when a ship sank. Another person was reported missing when a ship sank in Quang Yen Quay.

Between 4 and 5 inches of rain were recorded in Vietnam's northeastern provinces, especially Hai Phong and Quang Ninh, officials said.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said a tropical depression formed southeast of the Philippines was moving toward the East Sea, Tuoi Tre News reported. Forecasters said the low may be upgraded to a storm.
