Moosehead beer brewing family member arrested in father's death

SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A member of Canada's prominent Moosehead beer brewing family was arrested Tuesday in the mysterious 2011 death of his father, police said.

Dennis Oland, 45, was taken into custody and is to make a court appearance Wednesday, Sgt. Jay Henderson of the Police Department in Saint John, New Brunswick, said in a release.

Authorities have never revealed how Richard Oland, 69, died. His body was found in his uptown Saint John office July 7, 2011.

The family is standing by the younger Oland, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported, with Richard's brother, Derek, saying they believe investigators are off-base.

"This situation truly is a tragedy for all of us who are part of the Oland family, and we are striving to understand and deal with the many implications," he said in a release.

"We will rely on the court of law, believing in the judicial process. We believe our nephew and cousin Dennis is, in fact, innocent and we will support him and his family members through the course of whatever legal actions unfold."

Dennis Oland's attorney, Gary Miller, had no comment, the CBC said.

Police suspect Oland, a stockbroker and investment adviser, owed his father more than a half-million dollars and he was the last known person to see his father alive, previously released documents indicate.

The father, who was married with three children, had left the beer company in the 1980s and the brewery is now run by Derek Oland.
