Court ruling ends Egypt's emergency measures two days early

CAIRO, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A state of emergency and curfew instituted by Egypt three months ago has been lifted, the government announced Tuesday.

A court ruling caused the emergency conditions to be lifted two days earlier than expected, the BBC reported.

They were introduced after sit-ins in support of ousted President Mohamed Morsi were forcibly ended by security forces in August. Hundreds of people died in the resulting clashes.

Initially, the measures were to be in place for a month, but they were extended another two months. An administrative court ruled they should be in effect for only two calendar months.

The state of emergency and curfew were to be lifted at 4 p.m. local time (8 a.m. EST), said an adviser to interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi.

The curfew had been blamed for a drop in business in Cairo at a time the government was trying to revive the economy.
