Japan shrugs off 5.5 magnitude earthquake

TOKYO, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- The central coast of Japan was shaken Sunday by a magnitude 5.5 earthquake that caused no apparent damage, seismologists said.

The quake occurred just north of Tokyo in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at 7:38 a.m. Japan time, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The epicenter of the shaker was deep underground and did not generate a tsunami. The Kyodo news agency said operations at nuclear power plants in the prefecture were not affected.
