TAIPEI, Taiwan, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Typhoon-generated waves that measured up to 26 feet high killed eight people in Taiwan, rescuers said.

Sixteen people were hit by three large waves Saturday and were swept out to sea, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Eight died and the other eight were taken to a hospital, rescuers said.

The residents were from the city of Xinbei and were attending a community college course.

The waves were caused by Typhoon Haiyan, a weather official said. Weather authorities warned residents to be cautious of the waves Sunday.
