The announcement came in a statement to Korean Central News Agency, one of the government's official media outlets, Yonhap, the South Korean news agency, reported. A spokesman for the ministry of state security said the man was arrested in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, and was an agent of the South Korean National Intelligence Service who had entered North Korea from a third country.
North Korea, or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, said the spy's goal was to encourage subversives, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. The spokesman said his arrest showed "to what extent the puppet group of conservatives has reached in its anti-DPRK moves."
South Korea called the north's allegations "preposterous," Yonhap said.
