KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A spokesman for Afghanistan's Ministry of Finance said two men were arrested after $5.7 million was stolen from the ministry's bank accounts.

Two Finance Ministry employees were arrested and were being investigated by the attorney general's office for the alleged theft, ministry spokesman Abdul Qadir Jilani said.

Officials believe the men were behind the theft, Khaama Press reported Wednesday.

About $1 million of the money was stolen with 38 forged checks by a ministry employee, the news service said.
