ATHENS, Greece, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Investigators said the gunmen who killed two members of Greece's neo-fascist Golden Dawn party were armed with 9mm handguns.
At least 12 bullet casings were found outside the party's office in a northern Athens suburb after the shooting, Ekathimerini reported Saturday, citing police sources. Police also found a motorcycle believed to have been used by the shooters 3 blocks away.
The party, founded in 1980, has been the target of violence in the past. Offices in Athens were bombed in 2010 and 2012 and an office in Piraeus in February.
Golden Dawn has also been accused of carrying out or encouraging attacks on leftists and immigrants, including the shooting of a group of Albanians wounded in 1999. The suspect in the killing of a Greek hip-hop musician during a brawl in Piraeus has alleged ties to the group.
While Golden Dawn leaders say the party is not fascist, its founders evoked the memory of Ioannis Metaxas, prime minister of Greece from 1936 to his death in 1941. Metaxas, a monarchist career military officer, governed by fiat after dissolving Parliament shortly after his election.
Golden Dawn won parliamentary seats for the first time in 2012.
Witnesses told Skai TV the gunmen appeared about 7 p.m. Friday, dismounted, shot their victims at close range and then drove off. A third man was wounded.
The anti-terrorism squad is heading the investigation.
