Kenya seeks international warrant in finding mall siege suspects

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Kenyan police said Tuesday they seek an international arrest warrant for suspects who bought a car used by terrorists in the attack on a Nairobi shopping mall.

"Once we apply for the warrant of arrest we'll be seeking the intervention of Interpol [the international police organization] in terms of seeking a red notice," said Criminal Investigations Director Ndegwa Muhoro, a reference to an international arrest warrant.

The four-day attack on Nairobi's Westgate Mall in September resulted in 72 deaths.

Police released image of two suspects earlier in October, and offered a reward for information, the Nairobi radio station Capital FM said.

Two members of the Kenya Defense Forces' special combat unit were dismissed and jailed for looting during the attack, Gen. Julius Karangi said.

Karangi said the two, and a third still under investigation, were found with cellphones and cameras allegedly stolen during the siege of the mall.

Karangi had earlier stated soldiers had taken nothing, other than water, from the mall, the Kenyan website Standard Digital News said.
