One killed in Lonmin mine accident in Marikina, South Africa

MARIKINA, South Africa, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- One mine worker was killed and three others were injured in an accident in South Africa, authorities said.

The incident occurred Saturday at a platinum mine in the town of Marikina, the South African government news agency said.

The mine is owned by Lonmin.

"The safety at our operations is our highest priority in our journey towards zero harm," company spokesman Sue Vey said following the incident.

Last year, striking workers and police engaged in deadly clashes at the mine.
