7.3 quake hits off Japan, tsunami, typhoon, warnings posted

TOKYO, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck early Saturday near Fukushima, Japan, as authorities posted warnings for a tsunami and the second typhoon within a week.

The quake struck at 2:10 a.m. local time 170 miles from Fukushima, where a massive quake and tsunami in April 2011 killed nearly 16,000 people and caused widespread damage, including a nuclear power plant meltdown and the release of radioactive material.

There were no initial reports of casualties or damage from Friday's quake.

The Japan Meteorological Agency posted a tsunami advisory in the Fukushima-ken Oki region for the Pacific coast of Tohoku, the Ibaraki Prefecture, and the Kujukuri and Soboto area, Chiba Prefecture. The agency posted a tsunami warning for the Iwate, Miyagi and Ibaraki prefectures, and the Kujukuri and Soboto area.

The Mainichi reported authorities have ordered 8,365 people on Izu Oshima Island, 75 miles south of Tokyo, to evacuate as Typhoon Francisco approaches. Kyodo News said the island town was the hardest-hit locality when Typhoon Wipha struck the region earlier this month.
