CAIRO, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi tried to seize a police station in Upper Egypt, security officials said Wednesday.
State news agency MENA said one police recruit was injured in the clash Tuesday night in Deir al-Barsha, Ahram Online reported. One of the attackers was arrested as the others were repelled.
Police stations have been frequent targets since Morsi was replaced by an interim military government, Ahram Online said. One police station in Kerdasa near Cairo was shut down following an attack in mid-August.
Earlier Tuesday, violence hit some university campuses.
At Mansoura University in the Nile Delta, police responded with tear gas when pro-Morsi students lit firecrackers and threw rocks, Ahram said. At least 18 people were injured, seven of them members of the security forces, and 25 students and teachers face disciplinary charges.
In Cairo, demonstrations continued at Al-Azhar University, one of the oldest in the country. At Cairo University, pro- and anti-Morsi students clashed with each other.
Students demonstrating in front of the Education Ministry were detained.
