Suspected terrorists kill 10 in attack on Nigerian village

ABUJA, Nigeria, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- At least 10 people have been shot dead by suspected terrorists in an attack on villages in the northeastern Nigerian state of Borno, officials say.

The attack came less than 24 hours after insurgents killed 20 people in an attack on a village near the Cameroon border, the Nigerian Tribune reported Tuesday.

Unconfirmed reports said armed gunmen stormed the village and ordered residents out of their homes before firing on them. The attackers also set fire to homes and public buildings, including a clinic and a school.

Three of the villagers were killed as they attempted to arrest the gunmen.

Military and police officials in the region could not be reached to confirm the report because of a lack of phone service in Borno state for the past four months.

Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, the chief of Army staff, announced Monday the Nigerian armed forces was recruiting 9,000 troops to deal with security challenges in the country.
