United flight makes emergency landing after popping tire

SYDNEY, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A United Airlines flight from Sydney to Los Angeles was forced to make an emergency landing because it blew a tire, officials said.

Flight 840 blew one of its tires while taking off from Sydney just before 3 p.m. Sunday, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The plane circled above Sydney for about two hours, dumping its fuel off the coast, before returning to the airport to make an emergency landing.

The landing was successful and there were no reports of injuries.
