The derailment was reported to Parkland County Emergency Services at about 1 a.m. Saturday, CBC News reported.
The Transportation Safety Board says 13 cars, four of which were carrying liquefied petroleum gas and crude oil, derailed about 50 miles west of Edmonton. Two of the cars caught fire.
No injuries were reported.
"It's still a volatile situation" in the community of about 100 people, said Carson Mills, spokesman for Parkland County.
Those who were evacuated were told they would have to stay away from their homes for at least 24 hours. Traffic in the area is expected to be rerouted for about 48 hours.
