Protest over China's response to flooding turns violent

YUYAO, China, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Chinese officials have called for residents to refrain from violence in protests over the government's response to severe flooding from Typhoon Fitow.

Police arrested several people at a demonstration at a government building in Yuyao, in coastal Zhejiang province, after bricks were thrown at police and government vehicles were overturned, Global Times reported Wednesday.

The protest, organized through social media, demanded government officials apologize for slow rescue efforts and to prioritize relief work. Electricity has still not been restored to parts of the city since the storm hit last week.

Cai Qi, a provincial Communist Party official, sent a message through social media calling for city residents to refrain from "radical acts," Voice of America reported.

He said local officials were doing their best to provide relief.

Fitow knocked out power for millions and resulted in billions of dollars in damage.
