BUDAPEST, Hungary, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A Hungarian prosecutor's office has charged former Communist leader Bela Biszku with war crimes, officials said Wednesday.
The alleged incidents took place after the thwarted 1956 revolution, the Hungarian news agency Magyar Tavirati Iroda said.
Biszku was allegedly a member of the Temporary Executive Committee, which set up a police force that fired shots at the public, including unarmed protesters, the indictment states.
If found guilty, Biszku, 92, could face life imprisonment, MTI reported.
Biszku, who was the interior minister between 1957 and 1961, was placed under house arrest last year.
The arrest was later relaxed, and Biszku was banned from leaving the city.
Additional charges against Biszku were also levied for illegally keeping ammunition in his home, MTI said.
