MANILA, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The death toll from the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit several islands in the Philippines has risen to 144, a federal official said Wednesday.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokesman Rey Balido said the greatest number of deaths from Tuesday's quake were on Bohol island, with 134, followed by Cebu island with nine and Siquijor with one, GMA News reported.

Officials said 23 people in Bohol were missing.

At least 291 people were injured, officials said.

The Department of Public Works and Highways estimated the property damage from the quake in Bohol to be about $1.3 million and about $1.7 million in Cebu.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 20 bridges were impassable in Bohol and four roads were closed to traffic, PhilippineDailyInquirer.net reported.

The earthquake also damaged several centuries-old churches on the islands.
