New photos released of suspect in Madeleine McCann abduction

LONDON, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Police investigating the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann released new photos of a man they say was seen carrying a child the night she went missing.

The composite photographs, of a man in his 30s, were presented after witnesses described seeing him carrying an infant from a hotel complex in Portuguese resort town of Praia de Luz to either downtown or to the beach, the British newspaper The Guardian reported Monday.

The suspected abduction of the girl, then 3, from her vacationing British parents has been a source of interest and controversy in Britain, and will be featured Monday evening on a BBC television program.

"A new understanding of events on the evening Madeleine went missing has resulted in a new focus of the investigation. There may be an entirely innocent explanation of this man [in the photos] but we need to establish who he is to assist with our inquiries," said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood of London's Metropolitan Police.

The investigation has already cost police 5 million pounds ($7.99 million), the newspaper said, and is focused on 41 suspects, adding requests for assistance have been issued to police in 30 countries.
