TRIPOLI, Libya, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan says a militia group and some members of the General National Congress, were attempting a coup when he was kidnapped last week.
The prime minister said he was abducted Thursday after opposition groups had failed twice in the preceding two days to gather enough votes in the congress to remove him from office, the Libya Herald reported Sunday.
In a television interview, Zeidan said a force that included 100 armed vehicles would not have been used in support of his abduction from a hotel in Tripoli without orders from someone in authority.
A militia group, the Libyan Revolutionaries Operations Room, initially said it was involved in the kidnapping, but later issued a denial.
Zeidan said "no more than four or five" members of the congress were involved. He said the congress would announce their names "shortly."
A man who interrogated Zeidan during his captivity mentioned a conversation the prime minister had a few days earlier with a member of the congress, which Zeidan said proved its members were involved in the plot.
