Spain: Ban of bullfighting on evening television is defeated

MADRID, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The Spanish Parliament has decided it is acceptable for bullfighting to be shown on television during children's viewing hours, officials said.

Left-wing parliamentarians proposed banning Spanish broadcaster RTVE's showing of bullfights from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., TheLocal.es reported.

Joan Baldovi of the left-wing party Compromis said the ban would protect children from violent images, and argued that the bullfights breached the RTVE style guide.

Miguel Sanchez de Alcazar of the Popular Party said the left-wing members were carrying out an ideological crusade against bullfighting, which he said represents refined culture.

The ban was defeated Tuesday in a 24-14 vote, TheLocal.es said.
