Iran wants to keep uranium enrichment program

TEHRAN, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Iran has the right to develop peaceful nuclear energy and continue enriching uranium inside the country, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said.

"The nuclear deal should allow Tehran to keep its enrichment program and provide greater assurances of the peaceful nature of its nuclear program," Zarif said Monday.

He said the West should realize sanctions and threats have proved ineffective, Mehr News and IRNA reported.

Iran seeks a "win-win scenario" in talks scheduled for Oct. 15 in Geneva, Switzerland, with the P5-plus-1 -- the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany -- he said.

Iranian President Hasan Rouhani, meanwhile, told Dutch Ambassador to Iran Johans Duma in Tehran Iran is ready "to obviate the ambiguities within the framework of talks," the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to have its nuclear issue settled in a short period of time," the agency quoted Rouhani as saying.
