Severed cat heads puzzle police in Canadian community

STOUFFVILLE, Ontario, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A macabre mystery had York Regional Police canvassing neighborhoods in Stouffville, Ontario, Sunday: Who put six severed cat heads on public display?

"It was scary, like something out of a movie in the sense that who would do this in a small town? Who would do that here?" Stouffville resident Gwen McIver-Knox told CTV News.

Police said the cat heads had been found in the area since mid-August. One was found near a day-care center. No torsos have been found, although in one instance there were two legs, and no blood, CTV News said.

"We've had about 250 calls from the community, people with information, possible witnesses and some excellent leads that our investigators are following up with," York Regional Police Constable Laura Nicolle said.

Officers, who said they had some strong leads, stopped at about 1,400 homes Sunday to talk to residents of the Whitchurch-Stouffville area north of Toronto about the case.

"We want pet owners to keep their pets indoors or be supervising them at all times because we still haven't solved this incident and they should be aware of that for sure," Nicolle said.
