13 dead after monster truck accident in Chihuahua

CHIHUAHUA, Mexico, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A monster truck plowed into a group of spectators at an air show in Chihuahua, Mexico, killing 13 people and injuring about 70 others, officials said.

Witnesses said the accident happened Saturday when the driver of the truck apparently lost consciousness after hitting his head while performing a jump over a pile of junk cars, El Universal reported.

Six people were confirmed dead immediately after the accident, said a statement from Mexico's Department of Roads. Three people died while receiving medical treatment.

Four more bodies were later found under the truck's massive wheels while debris was being removed from the scene, the statement said.

Chihuahua Mayor Marco Quezada initially said 47 others were injured, but medical reports confirmed that 70 people were injured, including 10 reported to be in critical condition.

The monster truck driver survived and was arrested at the scene.
