CAIRO, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Four people have been killed and dozens injured in clashes during demonstrations across Egypt by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, officials say.
The protesters were killed in separate clashes in the Manial and Zeitoun districts of Cairo, Ahram Online reported Friday. A total of 40 people were injured in the violence, officials said.
In Manial, pro-Morsi supporters headed to Tahrir Square and local residents fought after tear gas fired by security forces pushed the protesters into the neighborhood.
The incidents were among numerous protests around the country in which thousands of Morsi supporters defied a security crackdown targeting the Muslim Brotherhood.
Protesters in Cairo's Agouza district chanted "Rabaa, Rabaa," referring a square in front of the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque where the military cleared a sit-in in August, the BBC reported.
The army has posted several military vehicles at entrances to Tahrir Square to bar protesters.
By early Friday evening, however, the streets of Cairo were largely quiet ahead of a 7 p.m. curfew.
A coalition of loyalists has called for protests in Tahrir Square Sunday, a national holiday.
