MULTAN, Pakistan, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A Muslim cleric was arrested after a gravedigger spotted him in a cemetery allegedly trying to rape a 3-year-old girl, Pakistani police said.
Angry residents of Koraywala Colony in Multan beat the man and tied him to a pole before he was turned over to police Sunday evening, The Express-Tribune reported Monday.
Sheikh Muktar, the investigating officer, said the girl and her brother were receiving instruction in the Koran from the cleric. He said when their lesson Sunday was over the man told the brother to go home, saying the girl needed to stay behind to revise her work.
Instead, he allegedly took her to the graveyard and dug a hole. Police said the gravedigger intervened when he saw the man taking his own clothes off.
The cleric is charged with attempted murder and attempted rape, police said. The girl was treated in a hospital.
