Russia keeps up Greenpeace crackdown

MOSCOW, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Russian officials said they have boarded a Greenpeace boat in the Arctic Ocean to inspect it after the group staged demonstrations at oil drilling rigs.

A Russian court ruled last week 22 foreign and Russian Greenpeace activist should be jailed for two months for their role in a protest of an offshore drilling rig. Eight other activists await sentencing for the Sept. 19 protest.

Russian officials said they obtained a warrant to board and search the Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise.

The ship's captain, Peter Willcox, and a lawyer for the organization will be present for the inspection, RIA Novosti reported Saturday.

The Russian Investigative Committee will carry out the inspection. It wasn't clear what officials were specifically hoping to find.
