JERUSALEM, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- There were no reports of injuries or damage after a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip into an open area in southern Israel, officials said.

The rocket was fired overnight Friday into the Ashkelon Coast Regional Council, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The Israeli army confirmed the attack and said it was investigating.

Top Israeli and Palestinian peace negotiators met in New York Friday at the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the progress of renewed peace talks.
