Son of Chinese military artist gets 10 years for gang rape

BEIJING, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A Beijing court sentenced Li Guanfeng, the son of prominent military artist and singer Li Shuangjiang, to 10 years in prison for gang-raping a woman.

Li, 17, was found guilty by the Haidian District People's Court in Beijing, along with four other men, of forcibly taking a woman from a bar to a hotel room and raping her Feb. 17, the South China Morning Post reported Thursday.

He was the only defendant to plead not guilty and received the second-longest sentence of the five men, the newspaper said. The only defendant who was an adult at the time of the crime was sentenced to 12 years, and the other three received three to four years in prison.

"In the course of committing the crime they have performed obscene acts to the victim, which should be seen as part of the criminal act of gang rape and have been put into consideration when determining the level of punishment," the verdict read.

The Li family tried to discredit the testimony of the victim. Li's mother, Meng Ge, told the court it should consider that the woman was paid to have drinks with customers at the bar.

The court said her profession "had no direct relationship" to the crime.

Lan He, Li's lawyer, said he would appeal the verdict.
