Manuel and Ingrid killed at least 123 in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- The double blow of Hurricane Ingrid and Tropical Storm Manuel has killed at least 123 people and forced 59,000 from their homes, Mexican officials said Monday.

Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said at least 39,000 people were still in shelters days after the storms, the semiofficial news agency Notimex reported. He said disaster declarations covered 312 towns in 14 states.

Most of the deaths were caused by Manuel, which brought deadly mudslides to the area around Acapulco.

President Enrique Pena Nieto signed a decree giving tax extensions to residents and business owners in the affected area. He said the federal government is working with local officials and emergency services to determine the extent of the damage.

The interior minister said services are being restored with electricity back on in 95 percent of the storm-affected areas.

Manuel made landfall twice on the west coast of Mexico between Sept. 14 and Sept. 20. Ingrid hit the Gulf coast in the state of Tamaulipas as a strong tropical storm on Sept. 16.
