Funeral in Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad hit by bombs

BAGHDAD, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Scores of people were killed Saturday in bombings in Baghdad, most of them in an attack on a funeral in the Shiite stronghold of Sadr City, officials said.

The National Iraqi News Agency said 50 people were reported killed in Sadr City and 120 wounded. Investigators said the initial explosion came from a car driven by a suicide bomber and a second from a car parked near the funeral.

Another car bombing, in Sabah Khayat Square in northeastern Baghdad, killed at least eight people. The bomb injured 15.

Smugglers on the Syrian border killed an Army captain, NINA reported. Two soldiers were wounded in the fight.
