MARACAIBO, Venezuela, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- As many as 16 people have been killed in a prison riot in Venezuela that has gone on for at least two days, officials say.

The three inmates who organized the riot at a prison in Maracaibo are among the dead, El Universal reported Tuesday.

The disturbance, which began Monday, injured several people inside and outside the prison, officials said. Errant bullets are believed to have wounded those outside the prison.
