Candidate registration begins for 2014 Afghan presidential election

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The independent election commission of Afghanistan began the candidate registration process Monday for next year's presidential election, officials said.

Registration will continue until Oct. 6, which is when the presidential race will officially begin, Khaama Press reported.

The next president of Afghanistan will be responsible for overseeing the final phases of the withdrawal of NATO troops from the country, the report said.

Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul, former national security adviser, is expected to nominate himself for president and is said to have the support of President Hamid Karzai.

Other potential candidates include Abdullah Abdullah, Ashraf Ghani, Hanif Atmat, Farooq Wardak and Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayaf, Khaama Press reported.

There are no clear favorites to win the election, the newspaper said.
