Turkey warns Syria's Assad likely stalling for time

ANKARA, Turkey, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Turkey's foreign minister urged the world not to become indifferent to the suffering in Syria amid the debate over chemical weapons.

Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters in Ankara Saturday that Syrian President Bashar Assad was likely stalling for time by agreeing in principle to allow international monitoring of its chemical weapons arsenal.

Davutoglu said the international community should not be lulled into the idea the crisis was easing. "Children are left orphan and women become widows as we are holding this press conference," he said.

Today's Zaman said Davutoglu also brushed off opposition allegations of "warmongering" on the part of the Turkish government. The minister said the chorus against international intervention ignored the brutal campaign being carried out by Assad's regime.
