Moscow court rejects plea to stop newly elected mayor from taking post

Sept. 12, 2013 at 5:21 PM

MOSCOW, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A Moscow judge Thursday rejected a plea to prevent newly elected Mayor Sergei Sobyani from assuming office.

Alexei Navalny filed a lawsuit in the Moscow City Court Thursday seeking a cancellation of the election results, ITAR-Tass reported.

Navalny also filed 951 lawsuits with 36 Moscow district courts, alleging that there were voting irregularities at individual polling stations across Moscow in Tuesday's voting, RIA Novosti reported.

"There is incontrovertible legal evidence in these boxes. We will do everything to protect the votes of Muscovites that were cast for [candidates] including myself," Navalny said.

Authorities have denied there was any irregularities and said there are no grounds for a recount.
