U.S., China envoys meet over denuclearization of North Korea

BEIJING, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. special envoy on North Korea met with China's chief nuclear envoy Wednesday to discuss the possibility of resuming nuclear talks, officials said.

Glyn Davies, the U.S. special representative on North Korea policy arrived Tuesday in Beijing as part of his three-country trip to South Korea, China and Japan, Yonhap News Agency reported Wednesday.

He met with his Chinese counterpart, Wu Dawei, to discuss Beijing's increased efforts to resume long-stalled six-party talks about ending North Korea's nuclear program.

While in Seoul, Davies said the United States is not likely to resume the six-party talks with the two Koreas, China, Japan and Russia, "until we see a much greater degree of willingness on the part of North Korea [to denuclearize.]" South Korea was also reluctant to return to the negotiating table without more willingness on the North's part.

China has suggested a mid-September gathering of officials from the six countries to discuss North Korea's denuclearization, Yonhap reported.
