BERLIN, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed admiration for Pope Francis saying he "continues to impress."

The comments came Friday during an interview with a German Catholic news agency, as Merkel's Christian Democrats lead in polls ahead of this month's election.

Merkel met with Francis in a private audience in May and said she found him well-informed, ANSA News Agency said.

"Since his election, Pope Francis continues to impress," she said.
