Magnitude-6.5 quake rocks Guatemala

PAJAPITA, Guatemala, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A magnitude-6.5 earthquake rocked western Guatemala Friday night, U.S. seismologists said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was 4 miles southwest of Pajapita, Guatemala, 5 miles east of Ciudad Tecun Uman, Guatemala,12 miles northeast of Suchiate, Mexico, 14 miles west of Coatepeque, Guatemala, and 104 miles west of Guatemala City, Guatemala. It struck about 6:13 p.m. local time at a depth of 42.1 miles.

KTTV-TV, Los Angeles, reported the USGS said there was strong shaking along the country's west coast for hundreds of miles in both directions from the epicenter, including in Guatemala City.

The TV station said authorities had not reported any damage or casualties, though it said the Guatemalan news agency reported the temblor caused panic in some areas.
