Cambodian opposition plans peaceful protest against elections

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Members of Cambodia's opposition said they have planned a 3-hour, peaceful protest against alleged cheating in July's national elections.

Demonstrators have conducted two rehearsals of the protest, set for Saturday, to show supporters how to go about making it a peaceful affair and how to properly submit if arrested by riot police, The New York Times reported Thursday.

"We don't want a revolution, we don't want a brawl," Kem Sokha, vice president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party said. "We just want justice."

The opposition alleges there were voting irregularities in the July 28 national election that ended with the re-election of Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power for 28 years.

The leader of the opposition, Sam Rainsy, called for a special committee to investigate the irregularities but said his attempts have "led nowhere."

Ou Virak, president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, said he supports the opposition's planned protest but worries it might not be enough.

"How are you going to topple the government with a 3-hour demonstration?" he said.
