Woman allegedly gouged out eyes of nephew, kills self

TAIYUAN, China, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Police in China said a woman who gouged out the eyes of a 6-year-old boy was the boy's aunt, and committed suicide by jumping into a well.

Guo Bin, of Fenxi County in Shanxi province, was found in a field five hours after he went missing Aug. 24, drugged and with his eyes gouged out. His eyes were found the next day in the field near where he was found.

Police said Guo's blood was found on the clothing of his aunt, Zhang Huiying, leading them to believe she was the attacker. Zhang committed suicide Monday by jumping into a well, China Daily reported Wednesday.

Guo's father, Guo Zhiping, said the boy was out of danger despite the loss of his eyesight. One Hong Kong eye surgeon has offered to implant electronic ocular prostheses, which might partially restore the boy's sight. The boy's mother, Wang Wenli, said the doctor offered to perform the procedure for free.
