Official: 27 Taliban militants killed in multiple Afghan operations

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Twenty-seven militants were killed in military operations conducted throughout Afghanistan during a 24-hour period, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

"In the past 24 hours, Afghan National Police, army, National Security Directorate and the NATO-led troops carried out several cleanup operations, killing 27 armed Taliban insurgents," the ministry said its daily update Wednesday.

The Interior Ministry's statement said another 10 militants were injured and seven militants were arrested during the raids in Nuristan, Baghlan, Kunduz, Kandahar, Wardak and Helmand provinces, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

The Afghan National Police also defused five bombs in Faryab and Paktiya provinces, officials said.

Also Wednesday, two Afghan army soldiers were wounded and one army van damaged in a bomb attack in Nangarhar province, Xinhua said.
