Pope Francis uses Twitter to condemn chemical weapons use

VATICAN CITY, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Pope Francis again condemned the use of chemical weapons, posting an entry on his Twitter account a day after he advocated peace in several Twitter posts.

"With utmost firmness I condemn the use of chemical weapons," Pope Francis tweeted Tuesday.

In a series of Twitter messages Monday, Pope Francis called for a world of peace, even as the United States worked to rally support in Congress and the international community for a military strike in response to evidence that President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons against Syrians Aug. 21 in Damascus suburbs.

"We want in our society, torn apart by divisions and conflict, that peace break out!" Pope Francis wrote.

Another post said: "How much suffering, how much devastation, how much pain has the use of arms carried in its wake."

"War never again! Never again war!" read a third, and "Let us pray for peace: peace in the world and in each of our hearts," another tweet said.

Pope Francis also condemned the use of chemical weapons on Sunday, saying, "I tell you that those terrible images from recent days are burned into my mind and heart. There is a judgment of God and of history upon our actions, which are inescapable," he said.

During his remarks, the pontiff called for a day of fasting and prayer on Saturday for peace in Syria and the entire Mideast region.
