KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- At least five people were killed and 17 were injured Saturday by a blast in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, a spokesman for the provincial governor said.

Spokesman Jawid Faisal said a suicide bomber blew himself up near a bank where a large group of people had gathered to collect their salaries, Khaama Press reported.

Most of the victims were civilians, Faisal said, but a number of the dead and injured were Afghan security forces.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incident.

Separately, officials in Wardak province Saturday said at least 16 Taliban fighters had been killed in military operations around the province in the previous 48 hours.

Another 10 militants, including high-level Taliban commanders, were arrested during the operations.

Militants have recently increased their activity in Wardak, which links Kabul province to eastern and southern regions of the country.
